Answering Sato-sensei's question about the promotion test, the trick is that one can only advance one step at a time, and there is no way to avoid the shameful kyu ranks. I should have started taking the tests a long time ago.
The next test is this June, but it is right before my defense at CU, so I don't think I can make it.
